This is a series of skateboard decks revolving around the themes of cosmic/Lovecraftian horror and fear of the unknown. I’ve been skateboarding in some capacity for a large portion of my life and have always loved the graphics on the bottom of skateboards. I always thought they were an interesting medium to work with as they can essentially take on this form of functional art. Skateboard graphics/illustrations is something I’ve wanted to tackle for a while and this series finally scratches that itch. These illustrations were created using Adobe Photoshop and Fresco where I experimented with many different digital brushes and tools.
A lot of my inspiration comes from H.P. Lovecraft who is often credited as the creator of cosmic horror and artists like H.R. Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński. I also take inspiration from other mediums like anime/manga, video games, movies, and comics. Some specific inspirations from these mediums include things like the video game Bloodborne and manga Berserk. All of my inspirations touch on cosmic horror or the unknown in some capacity and also serve as muses for my graphical style.
Ultimately, my goal is to inspire viewers to confront the darkness and the unknown, and to find beauty in the terrifying and awe-inspiring aspects of the universe. By engaging with these themes through my illustrations, I hope to encourage others to embrace their own sense of wonder and curiosity, and to explore the mysteries of the cosmos with an open mind and a fearless spirit.
